Personality customization is where an AI character stops being a template and starts being distinctive. The core inputs are traits (interests, quirks, values), tone (how formally or casually the character speaks), and boundaries (what topics or behaviors are off-limits for that character specifically).
The most common mistake is relying on single adjectives—'kind,' 'funny,' 'shy'—without backing them up with specifics. A character described only as 'funny' has to guess at what kind of humor fits; a character described as 'deadpan, sarcastic about small inconveniences, terrible at taking compliments' gives the model something concrete to work from.
Customization isn't limited to initial setup, either. Most platforms let you revisit and adjust personality traits after chatting for a while, once you've seen how the character actually behaves in practice.
