How to Create Consistent AI Characters
Character consistency has two dimensions: personality consistency in chat, and visual consistency across generated images or video. Both come from the same root cause—how clearly the character was defined at setup, and whether every later interaction references that same definition.
Personality drift usually happens when traits are too vague to constrain behavior meaningfully. Visual drift usually happens when a character isn't tied to a single reusable identity, so each new image effectively starts from a different starting point.
The fix for both is the same principle: define the character specifically once, then make sure chat and generation both pull from that one definition instead of treating each session or image as a fresh, disconnected request.
Why Characters Drift
Personality drift comes from vague trait definitions that leave too much room for variation. Visual drift comes from generating images without a consistent reference to the character's established appearance.
Locking In Personality Consistency
Specific, detailed traits—not broad adjectives—give the character less room to wander. Revisiting and refining traits after early conversations can also tighten consistency over time.
Locking In Visual Consistency
Generating images from the same character record, rather than re-describing appearance from scratch each time, is the most reliable way to keep a consistent look across outputs.
Testing for Consistency
A simple test: describe the same scenario to the character on two different days. If personality and tone hold steady, the setup is working; if not, the trait definitions likely need to be more specific.
FAQ
- Why does my character's personality feel different some days?
- This is usually a sign that personality traits were defined too broadly at setup, leaving room for more variation between conversations.
- Can I fix visual drift after character creation?
- Yes—generating future images from the same character record instead of freeform prompts typically improves consistency.
- Does consistency require memory features?
- Personality and visual consistency mainly come from setup and generation linkage; memory adds continuity of specific conversation details on top of that.
- Is perfect consistency guaranteed?
- No. Consistency is a target, not a guarantee—results can still vary with scene complexity or very open-ended conversation.
